The South African Adventure Industry Association (SA AIA) has successfully completed Safety on Steep Ground Parts 1 and 2, a specialised CPD training series designed to strengthen the technical competence and safety awareness of certified and aspiring adventure hiking tourist guides across South Africa.

Led by renowned mountaineer, author, and trainer Tony Lourens, with support from experienced local guide Mike Scott, the training provided highly practical instruction on ropework, anchor systems, terrain movement, communication, and decision-making in steep environments.

Participants worked through:

  • Anchor building and belaying techniques

  • Munter, clove, and figure-8 knots

  • C-grade scrambling and short-pitch leading

  • Safe movement on steep and mixed terrain

  • Effective communication and client management

The training concluded with participants from both sessions qualifying for their official SA AIA CPD Certificates.

“Competence on steep terrain is essential for safety and professionalism. This training series demonstrates our commitment to equipping guides with the skills required in real-world conditions.”Jessi Sunkel, Executive Director, SA AIA
