SA AIA Operating Adventure Quad Bikes and Side-by-Sides in Off-road Conditions – Courses Curriculum (Revision 1)

 

This document sets out the official SA AIA curriculum framework for training learners to operate quad bikes and side-by-side vehicles safely and responsibly in off-road conditions. It forms part of the SA AIA Technical Competency Framework.

 

The curriculum provides Skills Development Partners, instructional designers, developers, facilitators and assessors with the structure and guidance required to deliver consistent, credible and industry-aligned training.

 

It addresses course purpose, target groups, prerequisites, course duration, learning outcomes, training delivery, assessment processes and course evaluation requirements.

 

What’s included:

  • A structured three-level training pathway:
    • Introduction to Techniques for Operating Quad Bikes and Side-by-Sides in Off-road Conditions
    • Basic Techniques for Operating Quad Bikes and Side-by-Sides in Off-road Conditions
    • Advanced Techniques for Operating Quad Bikes and Side-by-Sides in Off-road Conditions
  • Recommended course durations:
    • Introduction: 6 hours
    • Basic: 6 hours
    • Advanced: 10 hours
  • Learning outcomes and content guidance covering:
    • Relevant off-road considerations and responsible vehicle use
    • Personal protective and riding equipment
    • Quad bike and side-by-side vehicle components, configurations, capabilities and limitations
    • Vehicle preparation and inspections
    • Tyres and tyre-pressure management
    • Riding and driving techniques for different terrain and obstacles
    • Body positioning, weight distribution and vehicle stability
    • Braking techniques and emergency stopping
    • Environmental awareness and responsible off-road practices
    • Recovery equipment, recovery safety and self-recovery techniques
    • Emergency tyre repairs and field-based vehicle considerations
  • Training methods, facilities and delivery guidance
  • Formative and summative assessment requirements
  • Learner competence and certification guidance
  • Course and facilitator evaluation requirements

 

The curriculum supports the development of consistent technical competence across recreational, tourism, outdoor education and commercial operating environments.
