The SA AIA Quad Bikes and Side-by-Sides Technical Skills Guideline (Revision 1) forms part of the official SA AIA Technical Skills Framework and defines the minimum competencies, responsibilities, safety standards, environmental considerations and assessment benchmarks applicable to quad bike and side-by-side vehicle activities.
The guideline supports instructors, trainers, facilitators, assessors and guides conducting off-road quad bike and side-by-side training and/or guided recreational experiences in South Africa.
It aligns with the SA AIA Operating Adventure Quad Bikes and Side-by-Sides in Off-road Conditions – Courses Curriculum (Revision 1) and should be read together with the curriculum and the SA AIA Off-Road Skills Development Partner and Facilitator Accreditation Requirements.
What’s included:
- Scope of practice for quad bike and side-by-side off-road activities, including supervision considerations, operating environments and limitations
- A progressive three-level technical skills pathway: Introduction, Basic and Advanced Techniques
- Minimum technical competencies relating to vehicle knowledge, preparation, body positioning, weight distribution, braking, terrain negotiation and vehicle control
- Safe recovery principles, self-recovery techniques, emergency tyre repair and appropriate recovery equipment
- Minimum safety standards covering personal protective equipment, first aid, communications, weather, emergency planning and vehicle condition
- Environmental considerations for responsible and sustainable off-road vehicle use
- Assessment criteria and performance benchmarks for each level
- Trainer and instructor guidelines relating to facilitation, supervision, assessment, learner records and certification
- Guidance regarding applicable professional, guiding and instructional roles
