“Journey of the Earth Walkers” - Member Spotlight: Adventure Hiking Guide, Mandla Sibanda of Hyqe Club

For Gauteng-based adventure hiking guide Mandla Sibanda, hiking is more than just an activity—it’s a movement. As the founder of Hyqe Club, Mandla has turned a personal love for nature into a growing community built on exploration, healing, and inclusion.

Mandla Sibanda from Hyqe Club

Although his passion for the outdoors has long been part of his life, Mandla's professional journey took shape three years ago when he launched Hyqe Club. What started with one hike quickly grew into something bigger—something that’s inspiring a new generation of South Africans to get outside.

“I’ve always been the one planning trips for family and friends—always drawn to safaris and bush adventures. But it was that first hike that truly hooked me,” he says. “I knew I had to explore more.”

Building a Community, One Trail at a Time

A typical day in Mandla’s life is anything but static. From researching new routes and managing messages to engaging venues and building Hyqe Club’s social media presence, he’s hands-on with every detail. But what drives him most is connection.

“It’s not just about the landscapes—it’s the stories people share. Many come to hiking not just for fitness, but for escape or healing. That’s powerful.”

Through Hyqe Club, Mandla is opening up the outdoor experience to a wider, more diverse audience—especially for those who haven’t traditionally seen themselves represented on the trail.

Representation and Reconnection

As a Black South African man from the townships, Mandla has seen how budget limitations and lack of exposure prevent many people from accessing nature. Part of his mission is to change that narrative.

“There’s a myth that hiking is expensive or only for a certain kind of person. I want to show that it’s for everyone—every race, gender, and background. Nature has this amazing way of bringing people together.”

Mandla also challenges cultural misconceptions through inclusive experiences that honour South Africa’s diversity. Respect, safety, and joy are central to every hike—and that starts with thoughtful planning.

“We consider weather, crime risk, health needs, cultural sensitivities, and more. We want people to feel safe, seen, and free to be themselves.”

Why the Outdoors Matters

For Mandla, outdoor experiences are a bridge to something deeper: national healing, confidence building, and the freedom to imagine new futures. And in a country still grappling with division, nature becomes a place of connection.

“In the outdoors, we meet each other differently. It’s no longer about where you’re from—it’s about who you are and what you share in that moment.”

The Power of Partnership

As a professional member of SA AIA, Mandla sees real value in being part of something larger.

“I joined because I believe in SA AIA’s mission to professionalise the adventure industry. Their focus on sustainability and opportunity resonates deeply with me.”

He’s excited to keep learning, networking, and growing—not just as a guide, but as a leader in the sector.

“The knowledge and support I’ve gained through SA AIA have helped me grow personally and expand what Hyqe Club can offer.”

Looking Forward: A Lifestyle, Not Just a Hike

Mandla has big plans. He’s currently developing a broader wellness ecosystem around Hyqe Club, incorporating partnerships with yoga instructors, healthy lifestyle advocates, and outdoor activity providers.

“The goal is to build a lifestyle around hiking—one that supports mental and physical wellness, community building, and self-discovery.”

His advice for anyone starting out?

“Love the outdoors, love your country, and treat everyone with respect. Always prioritise safety, and remember that hiking might mean more to someone than you’ll ever know.”

Final Words: Rewriting the Narrative

Through Hyqe Club, Mandla is rewriting the narrative around who belongs in nature. With passion, purpose, and presence, he’s building more than a hiking club—he’s building a movement.

“This is the journey of the Earth Walkers. And it’s just the beginning.”
