Shaping the Future of Learning Outside the Classroom: The LOTC Practitioner Chapter Takes Off!

Writer: SA AIASA AIA

What a sight to behold: a group of passionate, driven professionals gathered (virtually) to discuss how to elevate Learning Outside the Classroom (LOTC) in South Africa. That’s exactly what happened at the inaugural LOTC Practitioner Chapter meeting—where educators, facilitators, and outdoor professionals came together to take bold steps toward professionalizing and strengthening this vital sector.

So, what went down? Grab your metaphorical hiking boots, and let’s explore!

The Challenges We Face

The world of LOTC is as exhilarating as a sunrise hike—but it’s not without its pitfalls. During our meeting, key pain points emerged:

  • Recognition and Standardization: LOTC is still a developing concept in South Africa, with many practitioners struggling to define their roles.

  • Fair Pay and Working Conditions: With inconsistent rates and undefined career growth, facilitators find it tough to sustain long-term careers.

  • Diversity and Inclusion: Many practitioners highlighted the lack of representation and language inclusivity in LOTC.

  • Access to Training: Professional development opportunities are scattered, expensive, and often out of reach for practitioners in rural areas.

  • Support and Resources: There is little logistical or legal backing for those working in the sector, from transportation to medical coverage.

Action Steps: Because We’re Not Just Here to Talk!

Now, here’s the exciting part—the real work begins!

1. Defining the Profession

LOTC needs clearer definitions. The chapter will spearhead discussions on defining roles, responsibilities, and expectations. No more confusion—just clarity and direction!

2. Championing Fair Pay & Conditions

It’s time to push for standardized industry rates and better working conditions. We’re looking at benchmarking best practices from around the world while considering the unique South African landscape.

3. Training & Development

We’re tackling training accessibility head-on! This includes:

  • Establishing SA AIA-recognized CPD programmes.

  • Supporting training providers who offer affordable, high-quality courses.

  • Paving the way for LOTC professionals to upskill and thrive.

4. Building a Community

Facilitators need a place where they feel heard, valued, and represented. This chapter aims to be a hub for LOTC practitioners to network, share knowledge, and advocate for their needs.

5. Representation & Advocacy

We’re setting up relationships with venues, regulators, and industry stakeholders to ensure LOTC professionals are given the recognition and support they deserve. SA AIA is committed to standing up for facilitators at every level.
